Window Coverings for Window Seats

When it comes to window seats, you need window coverings that are both comfortable and durable, on top of providing solutions for a number of other concerns. Accomplishing all these tasks simultaneously can be difficult, which is why we’re happy to offer our expertise in guiding you to the perfect product.
The first concern to address is durability, as the wrong product is likely to become damaged and require replacing in the near future. Blinds, both vertical and horizontal, are not a good choice for a window seat area where people might lean against them. Cellular shades are also a poor choice, as they can easily be crushed out of shape. Natural shades, flat roman shades, and roller shades are better options in terms of durability, as is drapery, as they are all unlikely to be damaged by a person’s weight. The best option for durability is shutters, although they do have downsides in terms of their comfort level.
For maximum comfort in your window seat, the clear choice of window coverings is drapes, as their soft, fabric texture makes them easy to rest against while you read, relax, work, or chat on the phone. Roller shades and flat roman shades also do well in this regard, as they are reasonably soft and unobtrusive. Natural shades are typically a little less comfortable, while shutters can be quite hard to sit against.
If spills and other messes are a concern, drapery can be quite a hassle to clean. Here, roller shades and PVC shutters perform better, as they are more resistant to stains and can easily be wiped down when a spill occurs. This benefit can be particularly important for window seats in spaces where children are active, as the mess they make shouldn’t damage your window coverings permanently.
One final consideration to keep in mind is your ability to balance natural light against heat, glare, and the harms of UV rays. While relaxing at your window seat, you likely want to be able to enjoy the sunlight while still being protected from it, so solar shades and similar products are a great investment, even as an addition to a more solid window covering.
For a classic look and maximum durability, consider PVC window shutters – or wood shutters if you prefer a more natural look.
For a cozy feeling and maximum comfort, consider drapery, and add a sheer fabric layer for when you want some natural lighting.
For a minimalistic aesthetic and maximum functionality, consider roller shades, and add a solar shade for UV protection that doesn’t remove your light or your view.
And for more unique options that still provide many of these great benefits, try flat roman shades or natural shades, as these may be the perfect fit for your unique space.
