5 Smart Ways to Choose Window Coverings for Metro Vancouver Homes

Solar screen shades across three bright dining-nook windows

Window coverings work best when they solve the needs of your room as well as complement its style. A street-facing Vancouver condo, a sunny Burnaby living room and a large-window home in the Tri-Cities may need very different combinations of privacy, light and controls. Start with these five decisions before you choose a colour.

1. Match privacy to the room and time of day

Look at who can see into the room, from which direction and at what time. Solar screen fabric can preserve an outward view during the day, but it should not be relied on for privacy when the lights are on after dark. Bedrooms and street-facing spaces may benefit from a more opaque fabric or an additional layer. Double roller shades let you use a daytime fabric and a separate blackout roller independently.

2. Plan for sunlight, glare and room darkening

Notice when the room gets its strongest sunlight and where it falls on screens, seating and work surfaces. Compare solar fabric openness with the view you want to retain. For sleeping or watching a film, consider a blackout fabric and the complete installation: fabric alone does not eliminate light around its edges. Suitable side channels or layered drapery may help, depending on the window. Explore our solar shade guide to compare openness and privacy considerations.

3. Compare fabrics in your own light

Screens cannot show every texture, undertone or level of transparency accurately. Hold physical samples beside the wall, flooring and furnishings, and compare them in daylight and evening lighting. Decide whether you want the treatment to blend into the room or become a design feature. Our Coquitlam showroom has fabric and finish samples to help you compare the options.

4. Check the window before choosing the treatment

Recess depth, handles, trim, opening direction and the space needed for a fabric stack can limit your choices. Patio doors need a treatment that accommodates everyday access. Angled, arched, skylight and tilt-and-turn windows need a product-specific review. For early planning, use our DIY measuring guide; confirm the final product and measurements before ordering.

5. Choose controls around daily use

Think about who will operate the shades and whether the windows are easy to reach. Compare suitable cordless, wand and motorized options. For motorization, consider power, charging access, grouping and the compatibility of any existing smart-home system. Hardwired products need the correct wiring planned for the selected motor. See our motorization options for a starting point.

Bring the decisions together

You do not need the same treatment in every room. Coordinate colours and finishes while letting each space have the light control, privacy and operation it needs.
