For the best visual effect, keep most window coverings uniform throughout your building, particularly within a single room

While it can be tempting to switch between different types and styles of window coverings, sticking to a uniform design creates a strong sense of visual cohesion for your home or business. This enhances the look of your building, rather than detracting from it with unnecessary distractions.

Some products are particularly beneficial to have in certain areas of a home, which might suggest that variety is the way to go with window treatments, but there is often a way to achieve those benefits through variations on a single design instead of incorporating many different ones. For example, you can add a blackout or room darkening shade behind another set of shades in areas where full darkness is desired.

Specialty shaped windows are an exception to this advice, as they are typically designed to stand out from the rest of your windows. In this case, adding unique visual flare with a distinct window treatment will enhance the aesthetic benefits of the feature.

Additionally, in places where the benefits of a particular window treatment cannot be substituted for, choosing function over aesthetics is a good choice.
