Happy Labour Day!

On Monday, September 5th, ShadeZone will be closed in celebration of the Labour Day holiday. As the last weekend before the start of a new school year, it’s a great time to take a small trip, spend time with family, attend community events, or prepare for school to start back up again. Labour Day, as the name suggests, is a celebration of workers, their families, and the labour movement. It was first introduced as a holiday in the United States in 1882 before Canada adopted it in 1894, but the origins of the holiday in North America actually revolve around events that took place in Canada a decade earlier. In 1872, demonstrations led by labour organizations in Toronto and Ottawa demanded the legalization of unions and strikes, and the release of the imprisoned leaders of the Toronto Typographical Union – who had been arrested for organizing an illegal strike demanding a nine-hour workday. While their demands for shortened workdays were originally unsuccessful, they successfully established legal protections for unions and strikers that would help them to gain these improved working conditions and more over time. Enjoy the long weekend; we will be back on Tuesday to help you with any blinds-related needs.
